Machine Control Customer Profile: Bailey Civils

Posted by Matt Lacey on

Bailey Civils are an established Civil Engineering contractor based in the West Midlands. They work for a variety of clients: Local Authority, Defence, Commercial and Domestic with a multitude of projects that really showcase their ability to tackle any technical challenge.

Investment in Efficiency

The majestic blue Kobelco excavator of Bailey Civils will be familiar to anyone who attended the Plantworx exhibition as it was a feature on the Kobelco stand as a great example of how technology can be used to increase efficiencies. To make sure this machine could reach the peak of productivity, it was kitted out with the latest Engcon tilt rotator and a Unicontrol Machine Control system supplied by Surveytech. Director James Bailey outlined how Unicontrol provided improvements across the board:

“ With the Unicontrol setup in our machine we are able to make changes to the 3d model in realtime and pass the data back to the operator in the cab, this cuts downtime virtually to zero and enables us to get it right first time. Each project we have all drainage trenches, attenuation pits and surface models drawn in 3d. Once the control points are setup on site we are able to achieve a +/-10mm tolerance with our Unicontrol MC GPS setup. No more running around with a laser level and staff for trimming. This in-turn ensured we ordered the correct quantity of materials to site e.g. pea gravel, filter stone, type 1 subbase and concrete with less than 1% waste. To give you an idea on the quantity surplus concrete after installing over 900m3 of concrete hardstanding on site, yes it was less than 1m3.”

And James Bailey knows how these improvements can add up. With 18 years of experience in the Highways & Civil Engineering Sector, Bailey Civils are able to provide breadth of skills and knowledge from: site investigation, design, estimating, procurement, logistics, setting out, site management, commercial management and quantity surveying, quality management, health and safety management and environmental + sustainability management. So they're able to offer their clients a turnkey solution from inception to completion. And what does that mean in practice? It means they're focused on the project being as efficient as possible from start to finish, so investing the latest machine control technology was a natural step for this ambitious company.

Getting it right first time

With the ability to create surfaces on the fly as well as loading designs into the machine, the operator is free to just get to work without relying on a surveyor setting things out for them or a groundworker and laser to give them levels. There's less rework too as everything is dug correctly, first time. With the capacity to engage in projects throughout the UK from their centrally-located base, Bailey Civils are the right choice for a multitude of services encompassing groundworks, utilities, civil engineering, drainage highways and more. And with their combination of extensive industry experience and adoption of cutting-edge technology such as Unicontrol machine control, you can be guaranteed the work will be done efficiently and well.
