The Leica RTC360 sits at the premium end of terrestrial laser scanning. It is designed for surveyors, engineers and reality-capture teams who need high-density, colourised scan data from buildings, industrial facilities, infrastructure and complex construction environments. Its appeal is clear: fast capture, integrated imagery and an assisted registration workflow that can substantially reduce time on site and in the office.

That does not make it the right answer for every job. The investment is significant, and its strongest advantages are only realised when the team has a clear workflow for planning scans, managing control, registering data and delivering useful outputs.

What the Leica RTC360 does well

The RTC360 captures up to two million points per second, with a stated range of up to 130 metres. In practical terms, that gives a survey team the capacity to collect detailed scan data rapidly across sizeable internal and external spaces. A typical scan can be completed in around two minutes, depending on the selected resolution and imagery settings.

Speed is not simply a convenience. On a live construction site, in a plant room or within an operational retail or public-sector building, shorter occupation times reduce the disruption caused by surveying. It also helps where access is limited, permits are tight or conditions change during the day. A team can gather more complete coverage before trades return, a road closure ends or an area becomes inaccessible.

The scanner combines laser data with HDR imagery, producing a realistic visual record alongside the point cloud. That is especially useful for as-built verification, heritage recording, facilities work and inspection projects, where the person reviewing the model may not have attended site. Colour imagery makes it easier to identify materials, services, labels and context within a dense cloud.

Assisted registration is a real operational benefit

The RTC360's VIS system uses visual and inertial information to establish the relationship between scans as they are captured. Through Leica Cyclone FIELD 360, the operator can review scan positions and preliminary links in the field. This does not eliminate professional judgement or the need for proper control, but it can make registration far less labour-intensive than older scan workflows.

For many teams, this is the scanner's most persuasive feature. Rather than returning to the office with hundreds of unstructured scan files and hoping every overlap is sufficient, the operator has an early indication of whether the capture network is holding together. Missing areas, weak links and obvious mistakes can be addressed while the team is still on site.

The benefit depends on good practice. Long, repetitive corridors, featureless interiors, moving people and machinery, or scan positions with poor visual overlap can still create challenges. Where survey control and traceable accuracy are essential, targets, control points and an appropriate verification process remain necessary. For professional work, point density and speed are only useful if the data is fit for purpose. Leica states a range accuracy of 1.0 mm plus 10 ppm, with angular accuracy of 18 arcseconds. Those figures are valuable, but they should be interpreted in the context of the complete job. Final confidence in a deliverable is affected by range, surface material, incidence angle, atmospheric conditions, scan geometry, registration quality and the control strategy used.

Highly reflective pipework, glazing, black finishes and wet surfaces can all affect laser returns. External work introduces further variables, including traffic, vegetation, rain and direct sunlight. The RTC360 gives a competent operator a very capable platform, but it cannot turn a poorly planned survey into a defensible one.

In normal building and engineering capture, the data quality is more than sufficient for detailed modelling and dimensional assessment when the scanner is used correctly. For very small objects, fine fabrication detail or work demanding metrology-level tolerances, a close-range scanner or another specialist measurement method may be more suitable.

Field use: fast, compact and well suited to busy sites

At approximately 4.5 kg including its battery, the RTC360 is portable enough for one-person operation, although a tripod, accessories and site requirements still need planning. Its compact form is helpful in crowded plant areas, occupied buildings and constrained urban locations, where carrying larger scanner systems between stations quickly becomes tiring.

The unit has an IP54 rating, providing practical protection against dust and splashing water. That is appropriate for many UK site conditions, but it is not an invitation to scan through persistent heavy rain or ignore sensible equipment protection. As with any precision instrument, keeping lenses and optical surfaces clean and allowing the scanner to acclimatise between major temperature changes will protect results.

The interface is straightforward for experienced scanning teams, and the linked field app makes the capture process easier to monitor. New users should still receive training. The quickest way to lose the time saved by a fast scanner is to make avoidable errors in scan placement, overlap, control or data management.

Battery planning deserves attention. A busy day involving high-resolution scanning, HDR imagery and large sites requires spare batteries and a clear charging routine. Storage capacity and file-transfer arrangements should also be considered before mobilisation, particularly when the project team needs the data processed quickly.

Software workflow and office processing

The RTC360 is most commonly used with Leica Cyclone FIELD 360 on site and Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS for registration and processing. The workflow is designed to keep field capture, registration and export closely connected, which is a major strength for teams already working within the Leica ecosystem.

The office software helps users organise large datasets, review registration quality and prepare exports for CAD, BIM, modelling and coordination platforms. The visual nature of the process can reduce the learning curve compared with more manual registration methods, particularly when the field team has captured a well-connected network.

However, software should be included in the budget and implementation plan, not treated as an afterthought. Point clouds can be large, demanding suitable workstation performance, storage and backup processes. Teams also need to decide what the client actually requires: an E57 file, registered point cloud, 2D drawings, Revit model, mesh, orthophoto or inspection report. Capturing every project at maximum settings without a defined deliverable can add processing time with little commercial return.

Is the Leica RTC360 worth the investment?

The answer depends on how often your team needs high-quality reality capture and how much site and office time the scanner can save. For a surveying practice, contractor or asset owner carrying out regular measured surveys, as-built verification or scan-to-BIM work, the RTC360 can deliver a compelling return. Faster capture means more productive site days, while assisted registration can reduce processing effort and the risk of costly return visits.

It is also a strong choice where the visual record has lasting value. Facilities teams documenting critical assets, architects working on complex refurbishment schemes and heritage specialists recording sensitive structures can all benefit from accurate geometry combined with detailed imagery.

For occasional work, ownership may be harder to justify. Hiring the RTC360 for a defined project can give a team access to the same capability without committing capital to equipment that may spend long periods idle. It is also a sensible route for testing whether terrestrial laser scanning fits the business before developing a permanent service offering.

Prospective buyers should factor in the full operating package: scanner, software, field tablet, tripod, batteries, training, calibration or servicing, insurance and capable processing hardware. The initial scanner cost is only one part of a reliable reality-capture operation.

Who should consider an alternative?

If your priority is straightforward room capture for property marketing or rapid visual walkthroughs, a lower-cost indoor capture system may be a more commercially sensible option. If the work is predominantly topographic, wide-area or corridor survey, GNSS, total station and mobile mapping workflows may offer better productivity. For long-range industrial or infrastructure applications, another scanner with a different range or accuracy profile may be preferable.

The RTC360 is at its best when detail, speed and repeatable registration matter together. It is not a budget scanner, nor is it intended to be. It is a professional production tool for teams that need to make confident decisions from reality-capture data.
